WELCOME TO THE SCARBOROUGH INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT

The Scarborough Information Systems Department was formed in May 1996 through the cooperative efforts of the Town Council and Board of Education. The municipal’s Information Services Department and the school’s Computer Technology Department were combined into one department to meet the ever-increasing technology needs of the Town of Scarborough in a cost efficient manner. This consolidation has led to a single combined staff of specialists that can better serve the technology needs of the town and schools. Both the town and schools are now sharing administrative computing hardware, software, operating systems and networking capabilities.

The town and schools are now taking advantage of the fiber optic network that connects all schools and most municipal sites. This wide area network allows the sharing of resources, hardware, software, information and communications between these locations. All schools have been wired and every classroom is connected to the network. The wide area network has proved invaluable in the distribution of voice and data between town and school sites.

A Comprehensive Plan for Technology (pdf) in the Scarborough School System was first adopted by the Board of Education in 1996. This plan was developed by the School Department’s Technology Advisory Committee and outlined the best use of technology in the learning environment. The Technology Advisory Committee, made up of teachers, administrators, citizens and business community members, provided technical assistance and vision to direct us through the 21st century. The Technology Plan is updated every three years to keep pace with the changing technology and educational best practices.

The Town of Scarborough is fortunate to have so many forward thinking citizens and employees that are willing to participate in helping guide the town in the use of technology.

TECHNOLOGY PLAN

Scarborough Schools integrated technology model, based on information technology at the point of learning, is changing the way we learn via instant access to necessary and useful information, capabilities, best practices, resources, and teaching/learning tools.

The over-arching online curriculum resources provide the framework for teachers and administration to access the widest possible range of information and information management tools to allow Scarborough students to experience a demanding learning environment which provides challenging and engaging opportunities to achieve the Guiding Principles of the Maine Learning Results.

Integrated technology and information resources allow the Scarborough School System to make the best possible use of all available resources, minimize the acquisition of costly materials, and allow our staff to accomplish more in the time available.
