- ABOUT THE MAPS -

The maps created for this study used information drawn from many sources. The base for the maps, was a collection of 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle maps, which covered the watershed area. These maps were digitized into a CADD (Computer aided design drafting) system, and were then stored to be re-created at any scale or level of information that the study team desired.

Secondly, we acquired aerial photography from the Greater Portland Council of Governments, a watershed boundary map provided by Maine Geographic Survey - Water Resources Div., several land-use type maps from both GPCOG and the Maine State Planning Office, and National Fish and Wildlife Wetland Maps (Wetland Inventory).

The digitized maps were plotted at a scale to match the aerial enlargements (1''=400', 1986) on clear mylar and overlayed onto the aerial enlargements to serve as a method of updating with regard to land development. The edited maps were then digitized into the system, correcting the original base and ready to accept additional ''layers'' of information.

Corrected watershed boundaries, field observations, land use maps from both sources, and wetland boundaries from National Fisheries and Wildlife Service, were transferred onto the base.

The two final maps were created to represent both ''manmade'' features and natural features of the watershed. Two sets of 24 X 36 maps were produced in color. These maps can now serve as a future base for additional information, as elements within the watershed change. They are probably the best representation of the Libby River Watershed, created to date and can be replotted at any desired scale or layer of information as desired by the town.

The map shown on the next page, in Figure 1, is that same base map plotted for an 8 1/2 X 11 format.
