Scarborough Police Department

 Detectives

The Scarborough Police Department Detective Bureau is comprised of a detective sergeant who supervises two detectives, a youth aid officer and an evidence technician. The detective sergeant also supervises the marine resources officer and community relations officer.

The detective bureau has several different functions within the department. The main objective of the Scarborough Police Detective Bureau is to investigate crimes that have occurred in Scarborough . These crimes range from criminal mischief (vandalism) to assisting the Maine State Police with murders that occur in Scarborough. The detectives are assigned reports that have been taken by the patrol officers. They then do the follow-up investigation which includes but is not limited to interviewing witnesses, victims, and possible suspects. They are trained to use several valuable tools to assist their investigation which include search warrants, evidence collection , interviewing techniques and surveillance equipment. The ultimate goal is the apprehension and prosecution of criminals as well as the recovery of stolen property.

The detective bureau also works as a liaison with other police departments to assist with criminal intelligence. This information is then passed on to the patrol officers in order to keep each officer up to date on the current crime trends and active criminals.

The Evidence Technician is responsible for the forensic investigations:

CRIME SCENE - searching, evidence collecting, photographing and diagramming

LAB- photographic and video work, processing evidence, classifying and comparing fingerprints and storage of evidence for court.
